We decided to give deserts a miss, we paid our bill and went to The Swan in Bibury for drinks. We were sat at our table 15 mins later than our booked time, the food was bland, over priced, service was beyond slow (they had no staff) cold restaurant, neighbouring table with similar Comments. When I went to the bar to order another drink, I asked if any managers were around as it didn’t seem fair for the bar man to be left dealing with all this, I was told “managers are there in the day” What use is this? What’s the point of a manager coming in to work on the graveyard times - surely they need to see this establishment when at its normal trading times to identify its failings and improvements. The bar queues grew, the reception was left unmanned for pretty much all the time we were sat there The tables remained dirty, lights on full blast, no music, cold, doors open - it was a joke. Meanwhile customers stood waiting to check in, we at this point became nervous about what we had come to. We saw customers arrive waiting to check in, to be greeted by what can only be described as out of control giggling staff who were busy drinking in a side room - they in turn thought it was appropriate to come and talk to the large man on reception who would giggle with them and openly shout “I’m going for a fag, if anyone wants to check in tell them I’m dealing with a customer” We were horrified - my friend who is a guest relations director for a leading London hotel group said this was worse than a youth hostel. When we finally was able to order we sat by the reception area as our table wasn’t booked until 20:30. We arrived at 19:30 - walked in to a freezing dirty entrance, dirty glasses on tables, nobody to greet us, one bar member on his own (he was very good but he clearly won’t stay from what he was telling us), customers stood waiting to order drinks - not one single manager in sight. Far from it…… Unfortunately and in hindsight (as always), one of my work colleagues had advised us to give it a wide berth, in her words “you will be charged a premium prices for a sub zero product” In reality these were generous words. Some girlfriends and I had booked for a catch up - after booking a table for 6 for food and drinks we were looking forward to what should of been a fantastic evening. My daughter had the Pesto lamb cutlets which were well presented and cooked to perfection. The mains followed after the appropriate amount of time, were delivered (by the original staff member) with our entree plates still in place and the inevitable juggling and swapping occurred. The entrees arrived in a very timely manner and were well presented, well cooked and very nice. We then had to open the bottle and pour our own glass of wine (I don't expect the staff to pour every glass, but in a restaurant I do expect the bottle to be opened and the first glass poured)Īfter perusing the menu we ordered our dinner - a different member of staff took our order and was very inviting and friendly. The spare wine glasses (four) were not removed leaving the table cluttered. she simply plonked it on the table with 3 flutes and left. We ordered a bottle of sparkling wine and when the staff member delivered it. On arrival we were met by the staff and shown our table, we were a party of three and there were four place settings - the fourth setting was not removed.
